Get Your Own Server On Your PC At Home For Free....

Labels:

Wouldn't it be nice if you could have your PC at home function like a Web of FTP server ? You would be able to share your personal web pages and files with your friends, and what's more, you could do it all for free. All you need is some free web and FTP server software, and a broadband Internet connection with a live IP address.
You don't actually require a DNS name service to run a website or FTP server. A DNS is just a service ( it's not fee ) which matches the name of your website ( such as www.yourname.com) to its live IP address. So others who need to log on to your website don't have to remember the IP address, but just the name. Somilarly, instead of going through the headache of registering a name against the IP address and spending money for no actual reason, just host your own WEb server at home using your desktop computer and some freeware. All you have to then do is spread the news around that you have your own website and distribute the IP address link using email or a chat service. For example, if you would like to host your website and want others to access it, just ask them to type the address ( actually the IP address) directly into their web browsers' address bar ( for instance, 'http://xxx/xxx.xxx.xxx', where 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' is your machine's live IP address, It can be accessed from anywhere around the world .)
The same procedure will work for the FTP server too. MTNL broadband in Mumbai and Delhi offers a live IP address with their broadband Internet service for a little as Rs 1,000 per year. Other Internet service providers such as Hathway, Reliance, Sify, etc also offer the service at different rates. So take advantage of this live IP service, creat you personal website and host it from your very own computer at home. The only possible drawback is that if you need your website to be accessible 24x7 you need to keep you computer switched on 24x7 .
Let's now proceed to what you will need to do to build this server and how to get it working. What you need for this workshop is a high-speed broadand connection with a live IP address and any old compute. We are going to use software that can run on Windows XP or 9x, but with similar software you can use Linux too. Let's start with the basics. You need and HTTP server ( web server ) program to host your website and an FTP server program for sharing your files if you need to. We have used Abyss Web Server X1 ( version 2.5. ) and Xlight fTP Server ( version 2. 835 ) for this workshop.

WEB SERVER INSTALLATION

To begin with, downloand Abyss Web server X1 fro free from http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/download.php or find it on the CHIP DVD this month. Install the server software and choose the way you want to let it launch when Windows Starts up. You can find Abyss Web Server for other operating systems such as Mac OS X, Linux and Free BSD on the same website. After the Installation is done, You will immediately be asked to choose the language of your choice in your web borwwer for the configuration proceduresw. Choose English, then on the next page, enter your choice of user name and password for administrator login. This password will be required for making necessary changes to you server. The configuration page then starts up and you can tweak your server accordingly.

At this point, your web server is actually fully functional and running in the background. To access it, all you have to do is loand your Internet broweser and type thre URL http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and press ( Enter ) ( Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of your machine ) . The default web page of the Abyss Web server will appear stating that it is working and you can now change the web page of you server. Creat you rown web page using software like like Adbobe Dreamweaver ( which is commercial ), or free software such as Weborama, ASPMaker or Hapedit.
The simply copy the needed files to the folder C:\abyss web server\htdocs which is the Web server's document path. Your opening web page must benamed either index.htm or index.html or default, aspx' you can even change the order in which the server looks for these default files from the configuration page under ' Index Files ', you can even use the same configuration page to add other types of files that you have created. The settingsare now done, and your server is ready to host your very own website.
CONFIGURING YOUR SERVER

Abyss is quite a simple application to use. Right click on the Abyss Web Server icon in the system tray, click on ' Show Console ', and feed in the user name and password that you entered during installation, This will take yourto the default configuration page of your web server where you can customize it according to your needs. For examle, you caneven get your web server to function like an FTP server ( but you cannot uploan files here, only download them ) by using the Aliases' feature, set a name for your link and select the directory or driver you wish tobe displayed to remote people so that they can download files from your computer. For example, if you would like to share the files from the folder
on your computer and want your guests to access it, just let them type the URL http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/download . .
All you have to do is add the aliases using the virtual and real path names. Other options available are ' Users and Groups', Indem files ', Directory listing' ' Logging ', URL Rewriting ', and more. To know more about what each function can do just click on the ' Help ' link located in the top right corner of thge configuaration web page. You can also see statistics of how many hits you get on your Web page. errors, the amount of date downloaded, etc from the ' Statistics' link on the configuration page.
ProBlogger TIP: If you want your friends to access your Webpage using a name for your website, they can do so by tweaking the ' hosts' file in Windows - it's very simple. Let's take an example here - if you want them to use the name http://www.abcdxyz.com as the website address for your IP address http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx all they have to do is add a line http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.www.abcdxyz.com to the end of the page of the ' hosts ' file located at C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ by opening it in Notepad. So the next time they type www.abcdxyz.com in their browser, your web page will be located and loaded. This happens because whenever they type www.abcdxyz.com their system will look up this file first, find the IP address of your machine and directly log on to your web site located at that particular IP address - a mini DNS server located on each individual computer itself.

FTP SERVER INSTALLATION

Building your own FTP server has never been so simple. All you need to do is download a light, 426 KB application called ' Xlight FTP Server V2.835 ' from http://www.xftpserver.com/download and run it directly without installation. It is aportable FTP server which stays running in your system tray when loaded.

CONFIGURING YOUR SERVER

Start the software and click on the ' New Virtual Server ' icon on the top left corner of the window. Choose the iP address ( the network card you want the fTP server to work on ) and leave the port number set to ' 21 ' click on ' OK' and then right-click on the new server you just made and click on ' Start Server '.

Your server is now running and waiting for connections. But you need to specify which files can be downloaded by your friends and who can access these files. Foir this, you will need to first creat a use rname and a password for those who will be able to gain access to your FTP server and then define a home path for them to download files from, Click on the ' User list' icon and in the page that pops up clock' add user '. Here you can add the user names and passwords which they can use shen accessing your FTP server.

You may choose ' anonymous ' username and no password too if you wish, but then everyone will be able to access your FTP server. Then choose the ' Home Path ' which will be the location from where a user can start downloading files when he logs on.
Your may create folders for each user to serve individual files to individual users. Once this is done, your server is ready for use. Use the same principle as the Web server ti access the FTP server from the Internet or any intranet. Just type in ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.21 in the browser or use any FTP client application to access ther server.

You can pause, stop or view logs from the control icons in the fTP server window. Choose the server messages from the setting page, chose the IP addresses you need to allow or disallow from logging into your FTP server, or enable disk quotas for each user.
You can also control the speed limit of each user for downloading and set permissions for each user to upload files to your FT server. Just play around with the settings to finally set the fTP server. Get help on complete details on what each setting can do by clicking on the Help icon. Voila! You have just set up an fTP server of you own.
There are also other free aplications available on the Internet that can be similarly used as free web and FTP servers. Well, now that you have installed your very own servers, go ahead and launch your website and FTP server @ home.

12 Useful Tips To Reduce Your Blog Load Time

Labels:

blog-load-time

Almost every newbie blogger fails when it comes to reducing blog load time. Most of the tutorials that are available on reducing the time taken for a website to load are often un-clear or incomplete. We decided to share our way of solving this problem. Below are 11 really interesting and important tips to decrease the load time of your blogs by almost 90%.

  1. Link To All images Inside Your Template From Blogger

I shared an important tip tomorrow about creating an Image Backup in Blogger and then Linking to All Images From there. Most of you use templates that are not officially provided by Blogger. These templates often contain images that are saved on services like tinypic or photobucket. When your blog loads the browser has to connect to all servers which link to your images, as a result leading to immense delay in the loading time of your blog. What you must do is replace all such images with those that you have saved inside blogger as explained in the my previous post. The advantage of doing so will be this that the browser will need to connect only to blogger while loading your images. Thus saving time.

  2. Save All Images in GIF or PNG Format

GIF stands for “Graphics Interchange Format” and PNG stands for “Portable Network Graphics” Both these formats are well compressed, smaller in size and widely supported by all browsers. But if size is concerned PNG compresses far better than GIF. In typical cases up to 5-25%. There are some transparency issues with PNG in IE6 but since IE7 is widely used these days, transparency is nor more an issue. Using any of these image formats will tremendously reduce the load time of your blogs by 60% i.e 70-90KB The size is an approximate for my blog and true size depends on the number of images you use.

  3. Give Proper Dimensions To Images

Giving each image a specific width and height will make it easy for the browser to load the image quickly. Always decrease the size of an image if the original size is larger. The general HTML code for an image looks like the one below,

The width and height will require a value in pixels. One pixel equals a dot on the screen. A Full size image on my blog will have a width=”590px” and height can be as long as I want. 590px almost equals the width of my posts. Hope that gives you an idea on how to choose width and height values for your images. Browsers find it easy to load images whose dimensions are specified. Make sure you make it your habit to specify a proper size for your images. If you use Windows Live Writer your life will become far easy.

  4. Don’t Use An Image As A Background

If you are using any image as a background then kindly remove it. A background Image repeats itself horizontally and vertically and is responsible for 50% slow load time. Just remove it and see the difference. To remove a background image simply find this CSS code inside your template, (Tip:- Its located just at the top of your blog. Simply search for body)

    body { background: #7AA1C3 url(http://xyz.com/blabla.jpg);

    width: 980px;

    color: #333;

    font-size: 14px;

    font-family: Georgia;

    margin: 0 auto 0;

    padding: 0; }

This code will look different in your template but you should be concerned only with the bolded black text. Simply Delete url(http://xyz.com/blabla.jpg) and save your template. Give a simple color to your background. #7AA1C3 refers to Background Color. You can change it by using my Hexadecimal Color Chart

  5. Save All JavaScript Inside Blogger

Why should you link to external sites for storing your JavaScript whilst you can easily save it in Blogger! Save All your JavaScript codes inside your templates just above using the code below,

The bolded text is where you must paste the JavaScript code that you use in your template by linking to an external site.

To find a JavaScript URL that links to external site, search for

Free Hot linking For Your files

Labels:

HOTLINKING

To write a good post, you will need to post images, audios, videos, flash files, JavaScript files etc. This can only be achieved if you setup an account with a free file hosting service. If you have ever used Google page creator, you will easily understand what I mean by hot linking. Just the way you upload your files at GPC and get unique URLS for your files, you do exactly the same at a free file hosting service which offers hot linking.

What is hot linking?

Hot linking means, directly embedding or linking to a resource on another server, such as an image or video, so that it appears to be part of the linking website. When you get an HTML code from an image hosting site or video hosting site and you paste it on your posts, the image or video appears instead of that code. This is called embedding. To embed an image, flash file, video etc. you must get separate URLs for your files and getting these unique URLs in other words is called hot linking.

Where to upload your files so to get hot linking?

There are many free file hosting services like,

Google Sites

You can host your files at Google sites by simply setting up an account plus you can create your own personal website using site.Google.com. Unfortunately the storage capacity is as little as 100MB. But Google Sites dominate all other services when it comes to upload and downloading speed. I just love it and rate it 10 out of 10 for keeping your files safe forever.

Important: Google Sites do not allow upload of JavaScript Files.

Sigmirror.com is a good website but I would recommend it only if you don’t want to sign up for an account and have your image files hosted for free. Moreover many JavaScript files that are uploaded here work just fine. Below are some of its features

  • You Receive:
  • 5GB of space
  • Max file size 10mb
  • 7GB of Daily bandwidth!
  • Hotlinking allowed on all files (no more download timers!)
  • No Image Watermarks
  • Many file formats permitted
  • Illegal/Pornographic content not allowed

Important: I wont guarantee its security. Your files can not be 100% secured!

Boxstr.com

Boxstr.com is a good website with a user friendly interface and some unique features like a User Dashboard.

Some of its features are,

  • Storage Capacity: 5.0 GB
  • Max Upload per File: 1.0 GB
  • Daily Bandwidth: 1.0 GB

You can see above that you can upload a file as larger as 1GB!, which no other hosting service offers!

Here is a screenshot of Boxstr.com dashboard,

dashboard

Important: I wont guarantee its security. Your files can not be 100% secured! Your files can get deleted during site maintenance.

Summary:-

  • Use Google Sites For Uploading any file other than JavaScript. It is highly Secured. After all it is ran by Google
  • Use Sigmirror and Boxstr for uploading JavaScript files and other heavy files like movies, songs, games, software etc. It is not a 100% secured site. Sometimes during maintenance of these sites all your data gets deleted.

Important!

There is another website by the name of hotlinkfiles.com

hot-linking

Please do never set up an account with them. They are just frauds with a stupid and highly un-trusted service. I lost 155 files by setting an account with them. I have emailed them several times but I am receiving no reply. I was simply too frustrated the day I lost my precious files. So I repeat do not …do not….do not set up andaccount and do not be fooled by a fraud website like hotlinkfiles.com

Importance Of Post Title Limit In The Eyes Of Search Engines

Labels:

title-tag-importance If the content of any blog is King then it would not be wrong to say that the Title is Queen. Post titles play vital role in search engine optimization. Each Post that you write has a title and this title is responsible for bringing Traffic to that selected Post Page. Now how do you write a keyword rich and full length title that may take you high on search engine rankings?

Google and Yahoo are indeed the two Mega Search Engines that dominate all others. But for Bloggers Google has more value then Yahoo and we usually receive more Traffic from Google than Yahoo. But We can’t even ignore Yahoo.

Both Google and Yahoo have different limits for Post titles. Google Displays only the first 66 Characters of any title while Yahoo displays the first 120 Characters.

For example,

The following title has 85 characters including spaces,

12 useful Useful Tips and Tricks To reduce The Load Time Of Your Blogger Hosted Blogs

  • Google Will display it like this,

12 useful Useful Tips and Tricks To reduce The Load Time Of Your……

  • Yahoo will display it like this,

12 useful Useful Tips and Tricks To reduce The Load Time Of Your Blogger Hosted Blogs

You can see the difference that Google has cropped the title and displays only the first 66 Characters while Yahoo displays the full title. Of course an incomplete or cropped title will not be much attractive to the visitors compared to a fully displayed title.

How Do You Write An Optimized Title That May Look Good In Both Google And Yahoo?

The best strategy is to create a long title consisting of at most 120 characters in order to make sure that the title looks good for both Google and Yahoo. The optimal title should be thought of as consisting of a primary title (for Google) and a secondary title (for Yahoo!). The primary title should consist of no more than 66 characters and your secondary title can be any length up to the point where the full title reaches 120 characters in length. Now lets see an optimized title below,

Absolute-Title

Now visitors will be able to see the red portion in Google and the Full title (Primary + Secondary) in Yahoo. You will now receive impressive flow of Traffic from both Google and Yahoo. Now that is like killing two birds with one stone!

Tip:- Use Only those Words in your titles that describe the entire content of your post. Such words are called keywords.

Best Adsense Ad Locations & Ad Formats To Earn Handsome Revenue

Labels:

Earn-Wisely Almost everyone is well aware that adsense really pays! But most people are still disappointed with their adsense revenue despite working hard in writing good content. I had the same feeling but as time passed I became more and more familiar at how Adsense payment mechanism works. Those who think they are smarter than the Adsense Engineers often end in frustration upon deactivation of their adsense accounts. Kindly prefer fair earning and give preference towards writing goodcontent and attracting more and more readers. The true income lies in the number of visitors to your blog. Clicks, Page Impressions will increase once you make a good start with adsense. By good start I mean choosing smart locations on your layout to encourage Clicks and boost up your daily page Impressions.

Note:-1000 Page Impressions can return $0.5-$1. Depends on type of Ad.

While deciding an Ad Position Always Ask your selves these questions:-

  • What is the user trying to accomplish by visiting my site?
  • What do they do when viewing a particular page?
  • Where is their attention likely to be focused?
  • How can I integrate ads into this area without getting in the users' way?
  • How can I keep the page looking clean, uncluttered and inviting?

By experimenting with certain Ad positions on our blog and by studying various adsense articles we can now confidently claim the best Ad spots for Blogspot and Wordpress blogs. Observe carefully our Monetized Sample Blog Layout below,

Adsense-Best-Ad-Spots

Every Blog has four main sections i.e

  • The Header:- where we display blog title, description and navigation menu.
  • Post Body:- where we write content
  • Sidebar:- where we display widgets
  • Footer:- where we display credits or widgets

We have numbered the best Ad Locations from #1 (best) to #4 (Least Best). The reasons for each location are explained below.

Location #1:-Displaying Adsense Advertisements Below Post Titles

This is the best position to display your ads. We have observed that our blog earning increased tremendously when we decided to display ads below post titles. In fact this is the only spot which is first sight of attraction for every reader.

You can observe that I have displayed no ads below post titles on my homepage but when you enter a specific page the Ad below post title appears. Like this,

ads-below-post-titles

This way we keep our layout clean and revenue green :) I will write a detailed post tomorrow on how to add adsense code below post titles, below post body and undernavigation menu.

The Ad formats below will return really impressive results for Ads displayed below post titles.

Best Ad Formats:-

  • Banner (468 x 60) Or
  • Square (250 x 250) Or
  • Medium Rectangle (300 x 250)

Location #2:- Displaying Advertisements Above Navigation Menu

Now this location is the second best position which is the favourite Ad spot choice for many professional bloggers. The reasons are simple. Firstly because this area is of greatest interest to visitors and secondly because Ads in this area look clean and uncluttered so it won’t annoy the readers at all!

ads-above-navigation-menu

This area will have the highest page Impressions because it appears every where from homepage to archives and individual post pages!

Tutorial on how to add adsense above navigation menu will be shared tomorrow.

Best Ad Formats:-

  • (728x15) Displays up to 5 links OR
  • (728x15_4) Displays up to 4 links

Location #3:- Displaying Advertisements At Right Side Of Header Or On Sidebars

header-right

These two locations have their own importance and according to our experiments we have obtained equal results from both these areas. These two areas give the highest pageimpressions. Again for the same reason that they appear everywhere, may that be your homepage, archive pages or post pages.

adsense skyscraper

Displaying a skyscraper at the sidebar can result in tremendous clicks. A skyscraper if customized well enough can appear just like a part of your blog links. The ads appearing in skyscraper are very tempting, interesting and attractive at the same time. A well displayed and clean skyscraper will always attract a visitor to find the right answer to his query.

Best Ad Formats:-

  • For Header Right Choose Banner (468 x 60)
  • For Sidebar choose Skyscraper (120x600) or Wide Skyscraper (160x600)

Location #4:- Displaying Advertisements Below Posts

adsense-below-posts

We gave this area the least importance firstly because the bottom of post is only reached when a reader really enjoys reading your article. Most often readers are in a surfing mood so they would not notice the footer at all. But still we can’t underestimate this area and can expect to get good relevantclicks by displaying the correct ad format as mentioned below.

Best Ad Formats:-

  • Banner (468 x 60) or
  • (468x15) Displays up to 5 links

A word Of Advise

Flow of Income from Adsense Requires patience and immense hard work. Give at least up to 1-2 years for income to flow positively. Give more importance toyour blog interface and to your content. A good blog content with unfair user interface is equal to an unsuccessful one. Write quality and unique posts. Buy a custom domain and work harder and harder. Don’t try short cuts by making fraud clicks because one can never beat the extra efficient engineers of adsense. If your adsense account is banned for some reasons, your entire blogging career will end in frustration. Think again!

Patience and hard work brings fruitful results.

I wish you have a nice blogging experience by monetizing your blog wisely and smartly. Take care :>>

Best Ways to Use Ghost Written Content

Labels:

If you are seriously blogging to build your business, brand recognition, or to position yourself as an expert in your field, you should consider getting the assistance of a ghost writer.

The term “ghost writer” is so mysterious that many people tend to shy away from using such a service. Don’t let the term scare you.

A ghost writer is simply a freelance writer. These writers earn money by writing for various individuals or businesses on a contract basis or per assignment. When you buy content from a ghost writer, you own all rights to the text. You can publish the articles under your name.

There are several websites from which you can hire freelance writers: www.guru.com and www.getafreelancer.com are just a couple. Employers offer projects and writers bid on the jobs. They offer secure measures of payment and article receipt that benefit both the employer and the writer.

Most websites that feature freelance writers allow previous employers to leave comments about their satisfaction or dissatisfaction. Reading those comments can help you sift through and weed out ghost writing applicants.

Most of the websites also give writers the opportunity to upload a resume and samples of previous writings or photography. Take a little time to review that information. It will give you a valuable look into the style and experience level of all the writing applicants.

There are several ways you can best use ghost written content. Use the articles you purchase and upload them to an article submission service. Be sure to enter the maximum number of articles allowed so you will reap full benefit of the service. Having someone else write your articles will save you a tremendous amount of time!

In addition, maybe you can make arrangements with your ghost writer to actually upload the content for you as part of the writer’s fee. Always make sure you read the articles and give approval (or instructions for any changes that the writer must make). Make sure your ghost writer understands that the articles may be uploaded only after official approval has been given.

You can also benefit by using ghost written content on your blog. Find a writer with a style you enjoy reading. To reap most benefits from your ghost written articles, post them to Blogomator. At www.Blogomator.com you can upload all your blog content, predetermine when they’ll post and you won’t have to worry about your WordPress blog for a long time!

Not only does Blogomator free up your time, using ghost written material means you have more time to concentrate on your business or cause!

If you will be using material written by several ghost writers, remember to choose writers with similar styles. After all, the articles or blogs they write are helping you to brand yourself or your business. You want to show consistency to build a respectable image.

Here’s another huge benefit of using ghost writers: you can appear to be a professional writer, even if you’ve never written an article yourself. You suddenly have the image as a professional writer and an expert in your field, without spending any time at all writing!

Content from ghost writers can also be used to help bridge the language gap that the Internet helped expose. More and more people all over the world are starting online businesses. Ghost writers can provide website content for the language of your choice. So, you can effectively communicate with everyone in the world!

Don’t shy away from ghost writers just because you’ve never used one in the past. Ghost writers can free up more time for you to enjoy or work on other aspects of your business. You won’t have the worry about grammar or sentence structure, either!

Avoid Junk Duplication in RSS feeds

Labels:

If you are blogging to promote a business or service, or to build your reputation in your chosen career field, you already know the importance of frequent postings.

How do you get those blog postings on a regular basis without running out of content? Some bloggers have used RSS feeds to fuel their blogs.

It may seem like the perfect solution. An RSS feed is a form of syndication used online. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication,” “Rich Site Summary,” or “RDF Site Summary.” No matter what you call it, there are risks associated with RSS feeds.

One risk is that your blog will be filled with junk content. When you rely on an RSS feed for your blog, you are not offering original or meaningful content. Your readers will not benefit and might not return to your blog again.

In addition to junk content, RSS feeds also often lead to duplicate content. If you are trying to build a reputation as an expert in any particular field, you do not want to have the same content on your blog as someone else.

Meaningful content (whether you write it yourself or have a team of ghost writers blogging for you) is key to successful blogging. Duplicated content will give your readers the idea that you might not be quite the expert they once thought you were.

It may not sound like much of a risk, but if your reputation is at stake, junk content and duplicated content are huge barriers to overcome. As you build your business or promote a service, junk and duplicate content could really create trust issues between you and your readers.

When you use RSS feeds for your blog, you may also be putting your readers’ computers in danger. Hackers can insert Java script codes into RSS feeds. When your readers open your blog, it exposes their computers to the hackers.

Does it mean you have to sit for hours every day to post your own blogs if you don’t use an RSS feed?

No, of course not. Programs such as Blogomator make blogging much easier. You still retain originality. You still offer quality content. But Blogomator makes those frequent postings so much easier.

If writing is a struggle for you, work with a ghost writer or freelancer who can convey the message you need to in your blog. Give the writer several topics of interest to blog readers and ask for 300-600 word articles. Once you have approved those articles, you may set them up for distribution to your blog.

Blogomator truly emancipates bloggers, freeing up time needed to concentrate on other business aspects or to enjoy some much needed leisure time.

One of the best aspects of Blogomator is that no special software is needed. You don’t download any files to your computer. Just log onto www.Blogomator.com and simply upload blog entries into your online account. Don’t worry about formatting your articles for a blog. The program does it for you! You choose when to post and where, and your blogging is complete!

For professionals who have more than one blog, Blogomator is very liberating! You can use the program to post to any or all of your blogs!

With Blogomator, many writers choose to upload and schedule a year’s worth of postings at a time. If you want to make additions to those postings, it’s no problem. Just enter your additional articles and schedule them to post, too.

Blogomator.com eliminates the need to feed your blog with junk or duplicated content that you might get from an RSS feed. Plus, your readers’ computers will be safer since the content you upload into your blog will not be exposed to hackers.
